ROYALTY-FREE (a.k.a. RF)
Royalty-free has taken a good
chunk out of the sales from the rights-controlled agencies over
the last several years but it is a segment of the industry that has taken hold. Camerique is a rights-controlled agency
and doesn't represent any royalty-free images. We believe that there
are many end users that never had or may never have the budgets
that would allow them to use traditional stock imagery in their ads or editorial
production if their budgets wouldn't allow for rights-controlled image rates. For these clients we are happy to see that, with royalty-free, there
are now stock images available at a cost that they can afford, which
allows them to place imagery and graphics in their comps - giving an
otherwise dull presentation, a breath of fresh air!
One main problem with RF - you don't know where and when the
image in question was used, hence the term - "rights-controlled". There's nothing more embarrassing
to a client than to find out that their direct competitor used
the exact same image in a promotional piece for the same type
of use. It has happened! The RF companies don't maintain that
kind of information. On the other hand - with a rights-controlled
agency, that's all we do. We track all the pertinent information
regarding the past usage of an image. We can also give the end
user an exclusive on the image meaning that we can keep that
photo out of the hands of competitors or flag the image so that
it isn't used within a particular industry (industry exclusive)
or for a particular use (usage exclusive). Most agency's
have this kind of information just a click (of a mouse) away.

same RF client will need the protection and history of an imageand that's what the rights-controlled agency can offer.
